United Airlines uses selfies to market ties to 2016 Olympics

Chicago Business Journal has reported United Airlines, a sponsor of Team USA for more than 35 years, has started a new phase of its Olympic ad campaign from ad agency McGarry Bowen tied to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro that begin on Aug. 5, the publication said.

The newest aspect of the campaign centers on out-of-home billboards with images of United employees shot selfie-style with several of the American athletes expected to compete in the Rio Games, including swimmer Missy Franklin, gymnast Simone Biles, soccer player Kerri Walsh Jennings and decathlete Ashton Eaton. Ad copy in the billboards will be minimal, using only the line: One Journey. Two Teams to reference long relationship between United and American Olympic teams.

United´s 2016 Olympic campaign will feature a new TV ads, which won´t begin until the Olympic games begin, with the debut commercial expected during the Rio opening ceremonies.
