Norwegian to fly A380s on London/New York route in August

Norwegian Air has hired Portuguese wet-lease specialist Hi Fly A380 to operate the carrier´s London-New York evening route in August, the company said.

The airline said the second-hand Airbus superjumbo will fly for Norwegian Air Shuttle later this month.

Norwegian said the A380 has been consigned to operate between London Gatwick airport and New York´s John F Kennedy hub after the grounding of some of Norwegian´s own Boeing 787s.

The assignment was announced after Thomas Cook Group utilized the aircraft to fly passengers between Copenhagen and Cyprus and Oslo and Majorca to solve a plane shortage issue.

comes after the Scandinavian arm of Thomas Cook Group this week used the double-decker to transport passengers between Copenhagen and Cyprus and Oslo and Majorca to help cope with its own plane shortage. The jet was released by Singapore Airlines after a decade of service and is the first used A380 to find a new role.

Norwegian plans to operate the world´s biggest passenger plane for several weeks as certain of its 787 Dreamliners get maintenance to resolve issues with Rolls-Royce engines.
