Greggs expands manufacturing capacity with new site

High street bakery chain Greggs has signed a lease on a new state-of-the-art frozen production and logistics site in Derby.

It comes as the company continues to expand its presence across the UK as it targets a store estate of 3,500, up from the 2,500 shops it currently trades from.

The purpose-built facility will provide additional manufacturing capacity for both sweet and savoury product lines, as well as logistics for frozen storage and fully automated robotic order picking and distribution. Additional capacity will be available for future growth.

Industry website The Grocer reports that the new depot will occupy a 23-acre plot on SmartParc SEGRO, a high-tech food manufacturing and distribution campus in Spondon, Derby which has been designed with a focus on sustainability, including an onsite shared energy centre, rainwater harvesting, solar PV panels and electric vehicle charging points.

Currently under development, Greggs’ new facility is expected to open in late 2026.
