Ethiopian Airlines to build USD 5bn airport near Addis Ababa

State-run Ethiopian Airlines has announced it will begin building a USD 5 billion airport this year in Bishoftu, 37 miles south of capital city Addis Ababa, the company said.

The new airport will be located on 13 square miles of land and will accommodate 100 million passenger per year.

Ethiopian Airlines, which has a fleet of more than 100 planes and serves more than 119 destinations, reported USD 4 billion in revenue in 2019, when it transported 12 million passengers and 432,000 tons of cargo.

In 2018, Addis Ababa rose about Dubai International Airport as the largest air transport hub between Africa and the rest of the world.
