US Department of Defense (DOD) has announced it has established the US Space Command as the 11th unified combatant command, the department said.
The station was established at the direction of the President of the United States and is under the command of General John W. Raymond.
The DOD said the command was established to ensure the protection of America´s interests in space, requiring necessary focus, energy and resources to the task. Establishing the United States Space Command as a unified combatant command is the next critical step toward the creation of an independent Space Force as the sixth branch of the armed forces.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said this step puts the US on a path to maintain a competitive advantage in this critical war fighting domain.
From establishment, General Raymond will remain dual-hatted as Commander, US Space Command, and Commander, Air Force Space Command.
