US networking equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) and Dutch chip maker NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ:NXPI) said today that each had put an undisclosed amount into Australian wireless communication specialist Cohda Wireless Pty Ltd.
The target, which is based in Kent Town, manufactures hardware products and has developed complete software solutions for automotive safety applications in the intelligent transport systems (ITS) market. Its products are being used in the US, Europe, Australia, Japan and Korea.
Combining their expertise and technologies, the three companies will develop a complete market-ready solution for the automotive and ITS industry.
NXP and Cohda Wireless have already created a market-ready, wireless communication solution for onboard-units based on Cohda’s existing radio and NXP’s software-defined radio technology.
Under the terms of the deal, NXP will exclusively license the Cohda 802.11p technology together with its chipsets to automotive customers. In addition, Cohda will be NXP’s preferred partner for automotive 802.11p reference designs.
