Barcelona Wi-Fi deploys service on more than 1,000 buses

The City Council of Barcelona has announced that Barcelona Wi-Fi, one of the main deployments of Wi-Fi city in Europe, has already expanded its Wi-Fi service for its entire fleet of 1,003 buses, the city said.

The Barcelona Wi-Fi service is delivered through Aptilo Networks and its Aptil Service Management Platform (SMP) platform , a state-of-the-art system that deploys and manages operator-level Wi-Fi services.

Barcelona Wi-Fi covers most of the city of Barcelona with free Wi-Fi in more than 1,100 outdoor and indoor access points.

On their first visit, users register in Barcelona Wi-Fi through a captive Aptilo SMP portal that adapts to the screen size of the user´s device. Users are verified through a link sent to their email. These users automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network on their subsequent visits, as Aptilo SMP remembers the user identification information from the first verification.

Due to government regulations, Barcelona Wi-Fi does not have to exceed speeds above 256 Kb / s in outdoor locations. Web pages of the Barcelona City Council and interior locations, such as libraries and museums, which are accessible with unlimited data speeds are excluded. Aptilo SMP manages policies to control the bandwidth, opening hours and allowed connection times, depending on the location of the access points.

Barcelona Wi-Fi is also available as a premium commercial service with unlimited speeds through a local service provider that also uses Aptilo SMP.

Aptilo Networks provides operator-level solutions for managing data services, with advanced features for authentication, policy control and billing. Aptilo Service Management Platform (SMP) has become synonymous with the management of Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi offloading with large-scale deployments in more than 100 operators in more than 75 countries and is a critical component For the management of Wi-Fi Calling and IoT.
